#Crit101 Week 5 – Synthesis and Evaluation

My section of the group’s video

So far this week, our group hasn’t had much communication with each other, and therefore we haven’t managed to edit the individual clips together into one video yet.

My part of the video is based on the positivity that eggs and chickens can have one people. I managed to break down into 50 seconds the way that chicken soup can bring a person comfort, and how raw eggs can help bodybuilders achieve their goals. Overall, the point I was trying to make in my video was that eggs and chickens provide positive feelings for people, and that is why they are the food of the people. I used my phone to record and upload the video, which consisted of my talking whilst showing some images to support my points on my computer screen to the camera. I edited the video by making it slightly shorter, brighter and less shaky later on y computer using the built in editor on Youtube.

This week has shown me the importance of others in learning. Whilst learning can be a personal task, especially in independent learning, however having others around you to aid your learning can be a great help. Working in a group takes away some of the pressure that working alone can sometimes have. It also ensures that everyone in the group understands their role in the task, and that everyone should get a fair and equal amount of work to do.

Overall, this week would have been better if there had been more communication in our group, however I think that as individuals in our group, we still managed to get the work done well. We just need to work out a way of bringing all our efforts together as one.

Week 4 Assignment

Article - Is Chicken Soup Really Good for the Soul?

This week, I have critiqued and analysed the above article to help improve my critical reading skills. I have improved my skills of this by looking through the article to find areas where the writer may not e correct, and given my reasons for why I disagree with what is written. I think that by analysing the article, I have learned to become a more careful reader by making sure that I read and understand the entire article fully, and by forming an opinion on the subject of the article.

This week, I have also interacted with Heather and Yash, who are also doing this course. All three of us have spoken in our English lessons together about how the course can help us with our analysis of the book, ‘Lord of the Flies’ which we are studying. Me and Heather have also spoken via text message and FaceTime about the articles we read for the assignment. We compared the articles and looked at points we could both talk about when writing the assignment.

Although I had difficulties with getting my computer to work, and also having flu for most of the week, I have found this assignment has helped me to become a better interdependent learner as I have learned better analysis skills, and better reading kills, which will help my learning in the future.

Week 3 Assignment - Google Docs

Over the last two weeks, we have been building on our skills to become independent learner by taking part in personal research about topics and building our own opinion about them. This week, we have been encouraged to evaluate our research by checking the sources and questioning their reliability and validity.

We have practiced this be looking back at the references that we used for our egg research projects from last week, and questioning whether they were reliable enough to support our points. This has helped with my understanding for effective research, as I have learned that not even the most respected of resources can be as reliable as they seem. Whilst famous chefs such as Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver may seem like the best places to turn to for information about cooking eggs, their opinions may be biased, or their own research incorrect. With this in mind, I have learned that many sources are valid, however unreliable.

As an in(ter)dependent learner, I have found that authenticity plays a big part in making this type of learning worthwhile. If what you learn as an independent learner isn’t correct, then you aren’t going to make any progress. I have learned this week that validating your research is as important as the research itself, and is one of the most important skills to have as an independent learner.

At the halfway point in the course, I feel that I have made alot of progress. I have found that it has already started to benefit my classwork, as I am able to offer different opinions than my peers, which has made me a valuable member of discussions and groupwork. This week has also been a great help to me, as it means that I can validate research I do for classwork, and can help me with independent learning I do outside of school as well.
