I use something called a pot of doom (not my idea I did get it from my partner teacher), basically it is lolly pop sticks with the childrens names on in a pot, and if their name is pulled out they have to answer the question.As you say it makes everyone think, although I know my hard working children do on occasion get frustrated, but the lazy ones still try to wiggle out of coming up with an answer.
